I enjoyed the premise and imagery of Enemy, but to be honest I'm sort of beginning to grow tired of this specific type of art film the ones which put together a narrative and define characters, and then completely abandon the thread in favor of purely symbolic points and magical realism. I really tought that was the case here, and im kind of sad to know its really not? (because this film became very creepy and powerful after i tought that was it) and when his wife became a spider, its like when its all revealed to him, who he really is, what he had done, and that he is actually in a limbo? and that was not really his wife, but something else, that reveiled its true nature, after he discovers everything? (because she is the one, actually alive, and its something else pretending to be her) Remember woman weirdly waking on the ceiling, like a dream. I had interpreted this as he was actually dead, kinda living inside his mind(or in limbo, whatever), and the persona he created for himself, the teacher, where the wife was his lover(remember how things wasnt working for them, like they were living a lie), and it was kind something to block his guilty, and his true persona(the bad actor). Remember he had a car acident with his lover, Melanie Laurent? (i think they actually died there) So how she was with him as a wife in the beggining of the movie, after the accident happened, as at least she(and probably him) was dead by that car accident? I'll see if I can dig up another source or a mirror. Obviously, the video is much more in depth and has good video evidence and a clip or two from Villaneuve. Basically it's a visual metaphor for commitment- something that he was afraid of and thrilled by but effectively wanted stamped out in the opening sequence, hinted at throughout, and then something he's resigned to by the end, after she pleads with him to stay this time. The video also addresses the spider at the end.

It's not 'hey you look like my husband, that's weird!', it's 'oh my god this is my husband and he doesn't even know me' terror. He has turned off that part of himself, or the alter-ego has blocked her out, or however you want to look at it. It also addresses the scene where she meets him as the college professor and he doesn't recognize her, emphasizing that her reaction is not bemused wonder at her husband's doppelganger, but frightened dismay at his failure to recognize her. It goes through all the evidence for this take, including the phone message and conversation with his mother and the torn then reappearing photograph. The TL DW is that yes, the story is about one man: a married college professor who aspires to be an actor and have an affair with a girlfriend. Anyway, I'd love to see some theories about the events of the movie, which for me is almost like a Mulholland Drive of the 2010's. Of course, evertyhing I said is my personal opinion and could (which would not surprise me) be 100% wrong. In that moment he realizes what he has done and then the guilt of everything falls over him.

The encounters with the girlfriend, however, seems to support it, mainly because the shock when she finds that he is married merely occur because of the situation and not because she thinks he is someone else (even though this behavior is described popularly as being two faced or something).ДЄnd the spider in the end seems to me like the climax of the situation for him. On the other hand, there are some scenes which discredit this theory, mainly the one where his wife meet 'him' on the university.

That being said, about the main plot, for me the movie gives some hints that there is only one character and that the alter ego is merely something he creates to cope with his guilt for being unfaithful with his wife.

I've watched this piece like three of four times now and even thought there are still some things I don't understand, I'm always amazed with the pace and control that Villeneuve seems to have over every single frame that is on screen.
